8 Reasons Why I Love Art

Here are 8 reasons why I love art and pursued art as a career. Art can do so many wonderful things and there are so many reasons why I love art! Growing up, I always loved making things, colouring and making crafts and painting on my plastic easel. As I got older, I started to see all the benefits of art and really began to appreciate the talent and skills I had been developing. I think we can always use more art in the world! Here are my 8 reasons of why I love art!

8 Reasons I Love Art:

Art communicates messages

Art has the opportunity to be very powerful and communicate messages that are impacting the world like climate change and social justice. Art has the ability of starting conversations and getting people to really stop and think.

Art gets us thinking critically

I love going to art galleries and just analyzing and thinking about what the artist is trying to communicate. Why did they choose certain materials? Why did they make the decisions they made?

Why I love art - 8 reasons from Jackie Partridge

Art is healing and therapeutic

You can make art on any topic, you can incorporate any medium like writing or journaling where you can really express something that might be difficult to talk about or just hard for you to explain. Through art, you can release situations that have been bothering you and you can begin to feel a sense of peace in your life.

Art is relaxing and meditative

Art has the power to be very calming and relaxing. It is nice sometimes to make art and just zone out. To calm your mind and just focus on keeping your hands busy. Making art like mandalas, repetitive pattern or repetitive marks can help you create a zen feeling.

Art is imaginative and exciting

Art is something that is constantly changing. There are new art supplies being invented and new processes of making art to try. That for me, makes the process of making art really fun and exciting.

flowers coming out of a paint brush. I love how creative art can be!

Art is creative and inventive

Making art allows you to be creative and problem solve through the process. Through making art you are creating or inventing. You are developing problem solving skills and decision making skills as you are trusting your intuition, trusting your eyes and figuring out what to do next.

Without creativity - we would lack so many inventions and our lives would be very different than they are today.

Art is everywhere

Art is all around us. It is on social media like Instagram and Pinterest. It is flowers in the garden, photographs we take, the way the sun dances on an object. Art is sidewalk chalk drawings, graffiti, masterpieces and doodles when you’re talking on the phone. I love going outside on a walk and being able to absorb everything. It’s so nice to really stop and look at something. I think the more time you spend noticing details the more you will recognize that art is truly all around us.

Art is easy to learn

Now more than ever there are so many ways to learn art. You can learn online and often for free like through YouTube. These educational tutorials and even the ones I do - make learning art so accessible and convenient for everyone!

Learning art is really playing and experimenting, testing, trying and being able to practice and know that it is okay to make mistakes. Although making art can be difficult. Learning art is easy! It’s important to remember that masterpieces aren’t made overnight and being successful in something does require time and effort. But with time and effort you will get better and so will your art!

1963-1974- Artwork by Jackie Partridge

This is an older work from 2015 called 1963-1974 by Jackie Partridge. The artwork is less than 2’ by 2’.  I completed this artwork during my undergraduate degree at Lakehead University. I created it as part of my art portfolio when I was applying to my Master of Fine Arts at Concordia University in the Fibres and Material Practices Program.

Polaroids and machine sewing - form a patchwork quilt of memories with old family photos. The photographs are arranged by colour to help the chevron pattern emerge. My grandmother was sorting through family photos and gave me a collection of photographs. I asked if I could cut them and turn them into an artwork and she said yes. There’s something weird about cutting up family photographs and replacing a part of them to form a new memory. I sewed the photographs with a zig zag stitch on my sewing machine in white thread.

Polaroids are such a nostalgic medium and have become trendy again. Working with this medium of found Polaroids really speaks to the time period and the moment that captured the photograph. I love the colours from the pictures and how they have faded over time. Some of the photographs even have my grandmother’s handwriting on the bottom of them.

I am very interested in quilts, sewing and textile art because when I grew up I had 8 grandmothers including great-grandmothers and great-great-grandmothers. The craft of quilting and sewing are very important to my family heritage and to myself.

Trail - Arm Knitted Installation by Jackie Partridge

Trail detail by Jackie Partridge, arm-knitted lace strips

Trail detail by Jackie Partridge, arm-knitted lace strips

Trail by Jackie Partridge is a work from my art archive that I made while living in Montreal and going to school for my MFA. This fiber artwork is very performative as I used the knitting process to create it. The act of knitting is very repetitive and labour intensive. It is the same motion over and over again. Learn more about this textile artwork below!

Trail

1’x 20', found lace, sewing and arm knitting, 2016.

The work was displayed at Ancienne École des Beaux Arts for the end of year MFA exhibition “Maureen” in 2016.

Jackie-Partridge_Trail.jpg

This art installation is made by cutting long strips of found lace curtains. The strips of lace were sorted by colour from a yellow cream colour all the way to a pure white at the bottom of the piece. The colour created a nice gradient. The strips were then sewn together to create a very long strip that was then wrapped like a ball of yarn. This process was repeated twice. Like knitting, I used my arms as the “knitting needles” and continued to knit for over an hour to create this 20 foot long installation that was suspended from the top of the staircase. I knit continuously since I used my arms as the knitting needles.

When this piece is lit it produces some beautiful shadows from the design of the white lace.

I have also displayed this textile artwork outside in the snow. You can see the photograph at the bottom. I liked draping it in the snow and seeing how it dragged across the snow.

Conceal - Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Conceal is a project that was inspired my a previous work Trapped this work is from 2017 by artist Jackie Partridge.  In the installation below I use the same hand dyed and hand embroidered dishcloth quilt from Trapped. The dishcloth quilt is made to resemble an aerial view of farmlands. Farming runs in my family as both sets of grandparents and great-grandparents owned farms. I grew up in Wellesley, Ontario, a small town surrounded by farmlands. I watched the land over time develop into subdivision after subdivision. This artwork became symbolic for concealing or covering, protecting and hiding the land. The dishcloths are dyed with inks and acrylic fluids with bright colours of greens, browns, yellows, oranges and pinks to represent the colours and beauty of farm fields. I really wanted to highlight the beauty and vibrancy of the landscape.

I am interested in quilts and fibre art because when I grew up I had 8 grandmothers including great-grandmothers and great-great-grandmothers. So the craft of embroidery and sewing are very important to my family heritage.

With my art practice I often reuse elements and photograph different artwork outside to change and transform the context of the work itself. I see my art evolving and transforming through time similar to how the landscape is in a constant state of change.

This quilt inspired artwork is draped over rocks at my grandmother’s house in Kinmount, ON. Their property is a special place where I enjoy spending my summer. I find being in nature to be a very inspiring place for my work and me as an artist. Photographed by me in summer 2017.

I see the quilt as a symbol of protection, warmth and comfort. Like most quilts are.

Printmaking Today -Article Feature for Patched

Patched is a project by Jackie Partridge that has been an ongoing photography series since 2018. My work Patched is ongoing and features nature photography and paper making. I have patched trees in a variety of places that I have lived and spent time in such as; Waterloo Region, Montreal, New York, Vermont, Kinmount, Bracebridge, Huntsville and more. Where I add map paper pulp onto trees where the bark has naturally peeled away. I see the act of patching trees as a form of mending the tree in a poetic way. The work is meditative and calming as I spent lots of time hiking and being in the forests. Forest Bathing is an act of surrounding yourself with nature and being present with the moment.

Recently my work Patched was featured in Printmaking Today. Chrystal Cherniwchan wrote a beautiful write up about my work Patched. Check it out below!

Sediment -Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Sediment art installation by Jackie Partridge was started in 2017. I started paper making in 2015 where I was working as a teaching assistant in a paper making class during my MFA. See some behind the scenes look at a current project and learn about the process of paper making below!

Sediment is an ongoing art installation since 2017 where I form sheets of handmade paper with blue jeans from my grandfather. Currently there are about 300 pieces of handmade paper.

Sediment art installation with blue denim handmade paper by Jackie Partridge

My grandfather is a retired farmer who sold the family owned century farm in 2012.

The paper acts as a memory and are stacked on the floor like waves in the water.

This piece is inspired by the artwork Remnants that also used old farming clothes belonging to my grandfather.

Learn how to make paper out of denim here! This explains the process for making this artwork.

Sediment art installation by Jackie Partridge made of 300 sheets of handmade denim paper

In order to make the denim paper the blue jeans must be collected rinsed with water and cut into tiny 1”x1” squares. After the squares are cut they are put into a beater that grinds the natural fibres into tiny blue threads.

After the pulp is beaten down to tiny threads (taking around 4 hours or longer) The pulp is added into a vat of water and a mould and deckle are used to create sheets of paper.

Trapped -Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Trapped is an art installation from 2016 by Jackie Partridge that I completed during my MFA. In this installation I hand dyed and hand embroidered dishcloths and sewed them together as a large quilt. I want the quilt to be seen as an aerial view of farmlands.

Above the quilt drapes a large sewn thread installation -made from white thread. The sewn piece is stitched on a dissolvable surface. The sewn structure mimics that shape of my hometown as viewed from a map and inside the shape are rows and rows of a basic symbol of a house shape.

Choose the Right Frame...

Choosing the right frame for your art can be very difficult. I will show you how to choose the right frame in this blog post! I want you to be able to show off your artwork proudly in your home. Whether you are an artist or an art collector you need to know how to protect and preserve your art but also to be able to display it with pride in your home! Here are 5 things to consider when choosing the perfect frame to showcase your artwork!

How to choose a right frame for your art? Think about empty frames like this one with lots of white space around the art.

How to choose a right frame for your art? Think about empty frames like this one with lots of white space around the art.

Here’s What You Need to Consider When Choosing a Frame:

Colour - the colour of your frame depends on the colour of the art. If the art is really light like white, cream, beige, pastel colours then it might look too harsh in a black frame.

With my own art I am using a lot of light colours and minimal designs to really complement your existing home decor so I frame my own art in white or wooden frames. However, I sell my art unframed to allow people to really choose the right frame for them. A frame really ties an artwork together; it makes it look finished and polished.

What Frames You Own - You should also base your decision on existing frames in your house. Figure out what your home decor style is and on what you like and already own. If you have all wooden frames then it makes sense to keep that consistent especially if frames are hanging near each other like on a gallery wall.

I like to buy frames at Ikea - they have cheap prices and a nice quality but they are plexiglass. Another place I buy frames is Michaels or Winners- sometimes they have glass frames -other times they have plexiglass. It comes down to your budget and preference!

How to choose the right frame for your art. Example of handmade paper art by Jackie Partridge framed in a thin wooden frame

Size - it’s important for art to have room to breathe or white space around it. A lot of my art looks great mounted on white. The frame around the mounting ensures that there is enough room to show off the art. Usually you want at least 2 inches of space around an artwork in a frame. Some style trends have even more mounting space up to as much 4-6 inches. It all depends on your style and what you like and don’t like.

Plexiglass or glass? - framing art in glass is going to be more expensive so consider your budget on framing art before you decide. Framing art in glass is a good option because you can get a protective UV coating if you are getting art framed professionally that will prevent the colours from fading over time. This is especially important in painting or photographs where colours will fade over the years.

Empty white frame. Neutral frame for framing art

Getting a free professional opinion - you can take art into a professional framer or a place like Michaels that have framing services. You can ask for a quote and usually the sales people will offer suggestions and thoughts on how you should frame encouraging you to buy. You can use their suggestions and a more professional opinion to help you decide on how you should frame the art and if you want to get it done professionally or if you feel capable doing it yourself. For art that I am purchasing or my own art I get it professionally framed so that it lasts for years to come!

Purchasing art is an investment. Art makes your home come alive and choosing the right frame will not only protect and preserve your artwork but it will show it off for years to come!

If you are considering purchasing my artwork and you are unsure how to frame it - don’t hesitate to email me.

Want to Have a Piece of Art Commissioned By Me?

Want to have a piece of art commissioned by me? Read on to learn more about the process of getting a piece of art commissioned. As an artist I have been doing art commissions for friends, family and even people I don't know that well for several years.

Creating a successful art commission can be a lengthy process but I have come up with a list of tips to create a faster and more positive process for both the artist and the client. I have 7 things to consider if you are wanting to get an art commission done and 7 things for an artist to consider when offering art commissions.

As a client getting a piece of art commissioned

  • Communicate what you want - be clear and specific if you have a vision in mind

  • Trust your gut-if you don't feel comfortable with anything -then don't go ahead with it

  • Ask for a price estimate if it is not provided to you

  • Figure out the size of the work you want

  • Figure out where you will put that piece of art -this can help determine the dimensions and also the style or colours you like - It is helpful for the artist to see a photograph of your space and know what you like (everyone has their own unique design style)

  • Send inspiration  -whether it's a photograph, colour swatches or a sample of fabric for the curtains that will hang next to the artwork - anything is helpful

  • Make sure you have done your research- Do you like the artist's work?

As an artist commissioning a piece of art I…

  • Give a price estimate that includes the size of the work, materials used, any custom finishes that are requested and possible shipping charges

  • Give an estimated deadline of when the piece will be finished-I take on 6 projects a year usually you will have a commission within 2 months -unless specified by yourself

  • Communicate clearly and ask questions- we will have a meeting or exchange emails to make sure you are happy with the end result

  • Create a sketch or mock up during the consultation process - see my ideas before committing - I will send you progress pictures if requested!

  • I will ask for photos of the work hanging in your space

  • I will send you a contract that explains payment and delivery of the artwork

Patched Ebook

Patched Ebook is a digital version of Jackie Partridge Patched Book. Patched was published in 2018 with the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund. It is a book of 38 pages- a collection of images colour printed of trees around Waterloo Region that have been altered by adding map paper pulp in areas where the bark has naturally peeled away.

In addition to the photographs in my book- there are a series of nature appreciation poems. I began completing this ongoing series of photography during my Master of Fine Arts at Concordia University while I was in the Fibres and Material Practices Program. I was living in Montreal and visited a nearby park often as it reminded me of home. Being in nature and walking in the woods was very meditative and calming for me. I began to really notice the trees and how the bark naturally peeled away exposing them. Since I was interested in paper making I started to add map paper pulp of recycled maps of places I have been onto the trees where the bark was naturally gone and saw this as a poetic form of mending or an offering back to the tree.

At the back of the book I have included information about my art process. To see more about this Patched series - click here!

Field of Green - Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Field of Green by Jackie Partridge

Field of Green, ink and acrylic fluids on polyester with ink on Mylar, 2016 - by Jackie Partridge

The piece is approximately 19 feet long. The piece has sewn in magnets and it suspends slightly away from the wall resting on nails. I’m happy with how this installation turned out as it was quite complicated to plan and ensure that the fabric and magnets were evenly placed. It was difficult to install Field of Green. I completed this large and colourful artwork during my Master of Fine Arts at Concordia University while I was in the Fibres and Material Practices Program.

I love using Golden Acrylic Fluids because there is less of a water concentration and it is more of a pure pigment so the colours are a lot more bright and vibrant. I started painting with inks on sheer, transparent fabric during my undergraduate degree at Lakehead University. I started painting on mylar which is a transparent plastic type paper during my Master of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University. I like the way the colours dry and layer on top of each other creating rings of colour and interesting lines.

When the ink is applied to the polyester it creates these abstract and organic forms. Layer after layer is applied. I love playing with transparency and layers and being able to see the painted mylar underneath the layer of sheer fabric.

This artwork is inspired by my family heritage of farming and the countryside surrounding my hometown in Wellesley, ON. Both of my grandparents were farmers and my mom’s parents owned a family century owned farm. The bright colours chosen highlight the beauty of the landscape and the vastness of the farmland that surrounds my hometown and where I grew up.

Fielding Through- Painted Drawing with Ink by Jackie Partridge

Fielding Through by Jackie Partridge

22’x12,”  ink and acrylic fluids on Mylar, 2016

Fielding Through is an accordion style book that stretches out creating a long continuous 22' field. Each drawing of the field is painted abstractly with coloured ink and fluid acrylics by Golden. The work was inspired by my hometown Wellesley, ON and the continuous views of farmlands that blur as the car drives past all the fields.

This artwork is inspired by my family heritage of farming. Both of my grandparents were farmers and my mom’s parents owned a family century owned farm. This piece highlights the beauty of the landscape and how expansive it is. I chose bright and vibrant colours to highlight the beauty. Fields, nature and landscapes are common inspiration for my artwork and art installations.

Since the mylar paper is transparent you can also see layers of the coloured washes from the previous pages in the book.

This piece is inspired by my work Field of Green, which is a large painted field on sheer white fabric with painted fields on large sheets of mylar that are pinned to the wall. The fabric drapes away from the wall.

A Needle in a Haystack - Textile Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

A Needle in a Haystack by Jackie Partridge

wall piece: 4.5'x 4 floor piece 3.3'x 3', found fabric, sewing, 2015-2016

Braided strips of found fabric create an abstracted hay bale referencing the traditional rag rug. The two hay bales are attached together with a long braid like umbilical cord connecting generations.  This textile artwork was created by Jackie Partridge in 2015-2016 while I was completing my MFA at Concordia University.

This artwork is inspired by my family heritage of farming and my matriarchal line. Both of my grandparents were farmers and my mom’s parents owned a family century owned farm.

Growing up, I had 8 grandmothers including great-grandmothers and great-great grandmothers. My matriarchal line was very skilled in sewing, embroidery, knitting and crochet which really inspired me to pursue textile art and study it during my MFA.

Can I apply watercolour paint or ink to your handmade paper?

No the paper is intended to be sold and displayed as is and has not been sealed to be able to have a liquid like a paint or ink applied. The handmade paper is not meant for painting, drawing or writing on.

Does your art come framed?

My art ships unframed allowing me to be able to offer free shipping in Canada and the U.S and allowing you to be able to select the best frame to suit your personal design style.

You can purchase the same or similar frames in your house or choose to invest and have it professionally framed. For my artwork I personally suggest simple frames like white or a light-toned natural wood since a lot of my art is softer, neutral and light coloured. Find the Perfect Spot to Hang Your Art (16 + Ideas!)

Finding the perfect spot to hang your art can be hard! I get that! I will show you how to find the perfect spot to hang your art in this blog post. I will give you over 16 ideas of where you can hang artwork in your home! It can be hard to choose a spot to hang your collection of art. You might find yourself asking “where should I hang this art?” Learn from artist Jackie Partridge - I’ll show you how!

Art adds beauty to your home. It can also make you happy looking at something you like or it can create a feeling of calm. You should hang art in an area you spend a lot of time in- so you enjoy it more. Lastly, art can tie the look of a room together and create a home you love which I know you deserve!

In this post, I am sharing over 16 ideas of places where you can hang art in your home. Giving you tips along the way!

If you are making an investment and collecting art then make sure you are displaying it in a way that it stands out and commands attention to get that “wow factor” when someone walks in a room. You can learn more about choosing the perfect frame here.

Let’s Look at Some Rooms You Can Hang Art… (It’s all of them except maybe the garage and attic?)

Hanging it in your bedroom - beside a mirror, near a spot you spend reading or relaxing like above your bed or beside your favourite chair.

In your nursery or child’s room - art can create a sense of calm and can be visually stimulating for young children - you could hang art above a crib or bed, on a small frame on a shelf or in a group of photos, quotes or other art you may have on display - this type of display is called a gallery wall.

In the bathroom - since bathrooms are a smaller space you will want to choose a piece that is smaller, so there’s enough wall space for the art to breathe.

Find the perfect spot to hang your art in your home.

In the kitchen - you can hang framed art on the wall by your kitchen table and you can hang a smaller piece of art by a patio door.

In the dining room - you can hang your art by the table. Hanging a larger or commissioned piece of art can really set the tone. You can also hang smaller pieces in row as a group of two or three above a buffet or side table.

In the home office - you can set smaller pieces of art that are framed resting on your desk, you can hang pieces on the wall that will relax and calm you like simple modern designs on the wall by your desk. You can choose art that isn’t too bright so you can stay focused and productive!

In the laundry room - you can really be playful. I have a few pieces of round denim paper and a denim pocket with added recycled blue jean paper. Laundry rooms are often smaller so hanging a smaller artwork on the wall by itself is best. Hanging art in this room can really help to brighten your mood -especially if you are not a fan of doing laundry!

In the living room -  you can arrange multiple pieces of art on a shelf and mix in some framed family photos in black and white or sepia tones that will complement that art on the shelf because they are neutral toned photographs. In the living room, it also looks great having art leaning on a fireplace mantle or displayed as a gallery wall above the couch.  You can read more tips on displaying art on a shelf here!

In a play room or rec room - in these rooms you can choose art that is more bright or playful. You can choose bold shapes and arrange art on a gallery wall by hanging different sized frames of art and family photos. You could even add some drawings or paintings your children did in frames as sentimental pieces of abstract art.

Let the art be the first thing people see. Quote by artist Jackie Partridge

In a larger entryway - you might want to have one larger artwork to create a statement piece. You could consider getting a commissioned painting done

In a smaller entryway - you could hang two artworks that are similar side by side as a pair. It’s good to have the art be one of the first things a person sees as they enter your home to give a welcoming vibe.

In a home gym - while running on the treadmill or working out it’s good to have something to look at, whether it’s a TV or a piece of art you love looking at. You need something that is going to motivate you or be your sense of calm during an intense workout.

General Tips:

Arranging art on a shelf or dresser - you can choose to arrange framed artworks with space in between them or you can overlap them slightly. There are a lot of great ideas on Pinterest. I have a board all about framing and art display -check it out here.

Creating a gallery wall - you can create your gallery wall in an even and mathematical approach- where you measure and have artwork lined up in rows all evenly spaced. Or you can create a gallery wall that is more organic using different sized frames and even different sized spacing. Again, Pinterest is an amazing resource and I encourage you to follow me on Pinterest and check out my board “Framing and Art Display.”

Hanging a diptych or triptych -  a diptych is when you have a pair of artworks that are the same size hung side by side separated by at least and an inch or two of space. A triptych is three artworks that are the same size that hang in a row evenly spaced. Art that is hanging in a row like this should go together and look like they belong. It can be art by the same artist, art with similar colour and subject matter (like all flower paintings). The art should really connect with one another since they are hanging so closely.

Hanging art on its own - hanging art on its own should really command space. If art is smaller (under a foot wide) then consider hanging it on a smaller wall like in a bathroom. If art is larger and it commands its own space because of its size or bold colours then it can hang on its own on a larger wall. Art should have enough wall space around it to breathe with out looking crowded and making the walls look smaller or like they are closing in on you.
