Sediment -Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Sediment art installation by Jackie Partridge was started in 2017. I started paper making in 2015 where I was working as a teaching assistant in a paper making class during my MFA. See some behind the scenes look at a current project and learn about the process of paper making below!

Sediment is an ongoing art installation since 2017 where I form sheets of handmade paper with blue jeans from my grandfather. Currently there are about 300 pieces of handmade paper.

My grandfather is a retired farmer who sold the family owned century farm in 2012.

The paper acts as a memory and are stacked on the floor like waves in the water.

This piece is inspired by the artwork Remnants that also used old farming clothes belonging to my grandfather.

In order to make the denim paper the blue jeans must be collected rinsed with water and cut into tiny 1”x1” squares. After the squares are cut they are put into a beater that grinds the natural fibres into tiny blue threads.

After the pulp is beaten down to tiny threads (taking around 4 hours or longer) The pulp is added into a vat of water and a mould and deckle are used to create sheets of paper.

Trapped -Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Trapped is an art installation from 2016 by Jackie Partridge that I completed during my MFA. In this installation I hand dyed and hand embroidered dishcloths and sewed them together as a large quilt. I want the quilt to be seen as an aerial view of farmlands. 

Above the quilt drapes a large sewn thread installation -made from white thread. The sewn piece is stitched on a dissolvable surface. The sewn structure mimics that shape of my hometown as viewed from a map and inside the shape are rows and rows of a basic symbol of a house shape.

Patched Ebook

Patched Ebook is a digital version of Jackie Partridge Patched Book. Patched was published in 2018 with the Region of Waterloo Arts Fund. It is a book of 38 pages- a collection of images colour printed of trees around Waterloo Region that have been altered by adding map paper pulp in areas where the bark has naturally peeled away.

In addition to the photographs in my book- there are a series of nature appreciation poems. I began completing this ongoing series of photography during my Master of Fine Arts at Concordia University while I was in the Fibres and Material Practices Program. I was living in Montreal and visited a nearby park often as it reminded me of home. Being in nature and walking in the woods was very meditative and calming for me. I began to really notice the trees and how the bark naturally peeled away exposing them. Since I was interested in paper making I started to add map paper pulp of recycled maps of places I have been onto the trees where the bark was naturally gone and saw this as a poetic form of mending or an offering back to the tree.

Field of Green - Art Installation by Jackie Partridge

Field of Green, ink and acrylic fluids on polyester with ink on Mylar, 2016 - by Jackie Partridge

The piece is approximately 19 feet long. The piece has sewn in magnets and it suspends slightly away from the wall resting on nails. I’m happy with how this installation turned out as it was quite complicated to plan and ensure that the fabric and magnets were evenly placed. It was difficult to install Field of Green. I completed this large and colourful artwork during my Master of Fine Arts at Concordia University while I was in the Fibres and Material Practices Program. 

I love using Golden Acrylic Fluids because there is less of a water concentration and it is more of a pure pigment so the colours are a lot more bright and vibrant. I started painting with inks on sheer, transparent fabric during my undergraduate degree at Lakehead University. I started painting on mylar which is a transparent plastic type paper during my Master of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University. I like the way the colours dry and layer on top of each other creating rings of colour and interesting lines.

When the ink is applied to the polyester it creates these abstract and organic forms. Layer after layer is applied. I love playing with transparency and layers and being able to see the painted mylar underneath the layer of sheer fabric. 

This artwork is inspired by my family heritage of farming and the countryside surrounding my hometown in Wellesley, ON. Both of my grandparents were farmers and my mom’s parents owned a family century owned farm. The bright colours chosen highlight the beauty of the landscape and the vastness of the farmland that surrounds my hometown and where I grew up.

22’x12,”  ink and acrylic fluids on Mylar, 2016

Fielding Through is an accordion style book that stretches out creating a long continuous 22' field. Each drawing of the field is painted abstractly with coloured ink and fluid acrylics by Golden. The work was inspired by my hometown Wellesley, ON and the continuous views of farmlands that blur as the car drives past all the fields.

This artwork is inspired by my family heritage of farming. Both of my grandparents were farmers and my mom’s parents owned a family century owned farm. This piece highlights the beauty of the landscape and how expansive it is. I chose bright and vibrant colours to highlight the beauty. Fields, nature and landscapes are common inspiration for my artwork and art installations.

I love using Golden Acrylic Fluids because there is less of a water concentration and it is more of a pure pigment so the colours are a lot more bright and vibrant. I started painting with inks on sheer, transparent fabric during my undergraduate degree at Lakehead University. I started painting on mylar which is a transparent plastic type paper during my Master of Fine Arts degree at Concordia University. I like the way the colours dry and layer on top of each other creating rings of colour and interesting lines. Since the mylar paper is transparent you can also see layers of the coloured washes from the previous pages in the book. 

This piece is inspired by my work Field of Green, which is a large painted field on sheer white fabric with painted fields on large sheets of mylar that are pinned to the wall. The fabric drapes away from the wall.

A Needle in a Haystack by Jackie Partridge

wall piece: 4.5'x 4 floor piece 3.3'x 3', found fabric, sewing, 2015-2016

Braided strips of found fabric create an abstracted hay bale referencing the traditional rag rug. The two hay bales are attached together with a long braid like umbilical cord connecting generations.  This textile artwork was created by Jackie Partridge in 2015-2016 while I was completing my MFA at Concordia University.

This artwork is inspired by my family heritage of farming and my matriarchal line. Both of my grandparents were farmers and my mom’s parents owned a family century owned farm.

Growing up, I had 8 grandmothers including great-grandmothers and great-great grandmothers. My matriarchal line was very skilled in sewing, embroidery, knitting and crochet which really inspired me to pursue textile art and study it during my MFA.

What is the cost of standard shipping?

Standard shipping is FREE in Canada. The U.S. and in all other countries shipping is $9.99.

How much is express shipping?

Express shipping in Canada and the U.S. is $14.99 and in all other countries it is $19.99.

Do you offer any sales or discounts?

Usually I offer 1-2 sales per year with no more than a 20% off discount. 

What is your refund policy?

I do not offer refunds on digital products like ebooks or online courses due to the digital nature of them.  For all digital products (ebooks and courses) all sales are final and nonrefundable.

I offer refunds on physical products like artwork and hardcover books. I will happily provide a refund for a physical product if an artwork or book ships to you and comes damaged. Although this doesn’t happen often and I ensure I package my art securely - it can happen with any online order. If you receive something damaged just take a photo of how the artwork was received and email it to jackiepartridgeart@gmail.com I will respond in 1-2 business days and send you an e-transfer. 

Are taxes included in the price of products?

Yes taxes are built into the prices of all products for sale.

Can I apply watercolour paint or ink to your handmade paper?

      

No the paper is intended to be sold and displayed as is and has not been sealed to be able to have a liquid like a paint or ink applied. The handmade paper is not meant for painting, drawing or writing on.

Does your art come framed?

My art ships unframed allowing me to be able to offer free shipping in Canada and the U.S and allowing you to be able to select the best frame to suit your personal design style.

You can purchase the same or similar frames in your house or choose to invest and have it professionally framed. For my artwork I personally suggest simple frames like white or a light-toned natural wood since a lot of my art is softer, neutral and light coloured. Find the Perfect Spot to Hang Your Art (16 + Ideas!)

Finding the perfect spot to hang your art can be hard! I get that! I will show you how to find the perfect spot to hang your art in this blog post. I will give you over 16 ideas of where you can hang artwork in your home! It can be hard to choose a spot to hang your collection of art. You might find yourself asking “where should I hang this art?” Learn from artist Jackie Partridge - I’ll show you how!

Art adds beauty to your home. It can also make you happy looking at something you like or it can create a feeling of calm. You should hang art in an area you spend a lot of time in- so you enjoy it more. Lastly, art can tie the look of a room together and create a home you love which I know you deserve!

In this post, I am sharing over 16 ideas of places where you can hang art in your home. Giving you tips along the way!

If you are making an investment and collecting art then make sure you are displaying it in a way that it stands out and commands attention to get that “wow factor” when someone walks in a room. You can learn more about choosing the perfect frame here.

Let’s Look at Some Rooms You Can Hang Art… (It’s all of them except maybe the garage and attic?)

Hanging it in your bedroom - beside a mirror, near a spot you spend reading or relaxing like above your bed or beside your favourite chair.

In your nursery or child’s room - art can create a sense of calm and can be visually stimulating for young children - you could hang art above a crib or bed, on a small frame on a shelf or in a group of photos, quotes or other art you may have on display - this type of display is called a gallery wall.

In the bathroom - since bathrooms are a smaller space you will want to choose a piece that is smaller, so there’s enough wall space for the art to breathe.

In the kitchen - you can hang framed art on the wall by your kitchen table and you can hang a smaller piece of art by a patio door. 

In the dining room - you can hang your art by the table. Hanging a larger or commissioned piece of art can really set the tone. You can also hang smaller pieces in row as a group of two or three above a buffet or side table.

In the home office - you can set smaller pieces of art that are framed resting on your desk, you can hang pieces on the wall that will relax and calm you like simple modern designs on the wall by your desk. You can choose art that isn’t too bright so you can stay focused and productive! 

In the laundry room - you can really be playful. I have a few pieces of round denim paper and a denim pocket with added recycled blue jean paper. Laundry rooms are often smaller so hanging a smaller artwork on the wall by itself is best. Hanging art in this room can really help to brighten your mood -especially if you are not a fan of doing laundry!

In the living room -  you can arrange multiple pieces of art on a shelf and mix in some framed family photos in black and white or sepia tones that will complement that art on the shelf because they are neutral toned photographs. In the living room, it also looks great having art leaning on a fireplace mantle or displayed as a gallery wall above the couch.  You can read more tips on displaying art on a shelf here!

In a play room or rec room - in these rooms you can choose art that is more bright or playful. You can choose bold shapes and arrange art on a gallery wall by hanging different sized frames of art and family photos. You could even add some drawings or paintings your children did in frames as sentimental pieces of abstract art. 

In a larger entryway - you might want to have one larger artwork to create a statement piece. You could consider getting a commissioned painting done. 

In a smaller entryway - you could hang two artworks that are similar side by side as a pair. It’s good to have the art be one of the first things a person sees as they enter your home to give a welcoming vibe.

In a home gym - while running on the treadmill or working out it’s good to have something to look at, whether it’s a TV or a piece of art you love looking at. You need something that is going to motivate you or be your sense of calm during an intense workout. 

General Tips:

Arranging art on a shelf or dresser - you can choose to arrange framed artworks with space in between them or you can overlap them slightly. There are a lot of great ideas on Pinterest. I have a board all about framing and art display -check it out here.

Creating a gallery wall - you can create your gallery wall in an even and mathematical approach- where you measure and have artwork lined up in rows all evenly spaced. Or you can create a gallery wall that is more organic using different sized frames and even different sized spacing. Again, Pinterest is an amazing resource and I encourage you to follow me on Pinterest and check out my board “Framing and Art Display.”

Hanging a diptych or triptych -  a diptych is when you have a pair of artworks that are the same size hung side by side separated by at least and an inch or two of space. A triptych is three artworks that are the same size that hang in a row evenly spaced. Art that is hanging in a row like this should go together and look like they belong. It can be art by the same artist, art with similar colour and subject matter (like all flower paintings). The art should really connect with one another since they are hanging so closely. 

Hanging art on its own - hanging art on its own should really command space. If art is smaller (under a foot wide) then consider hanging it on a smaller wall like in a bathroom. If art is larger and it commands its own space because of its size or bold colours then it can hang on its own on a larger wall. Art should have enough wall space around it to breathe with out looking crowded and making the walls look smaller or like they are closing in on you.
